How to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common ailment that can cause discomfort and inconvenience. UTIs occur when bacteria enters the urinary tract and infects the bladder, urethra, or kidneys.

Women are more susceptible to UTIs than men, but anyone can get one. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to prevent UTIs. Here are some tips for preventing UTIs:

  1. Drink plenty of water: Drinking water helps flush bacteria out of the urinary tract and keeps the urine diluted. Aim for at least eight glasses of water per day.

  2. Urinate after intercourse: Urinating after intercourse helps flush out bacteria that may have entered the urinary tract during sex.

  3. Wipe from front to back: After using the toilet, always wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from the anus from spreading to the urethra.

  4. Wear breathable underwear: Choose underwear made from breathable materials, such as cotton, to help keep the area dry and prevent bacteria from growing.

  5. Avoid using irritating products: Douches, powders, and other products can irritate the urethra and increase the risk of UTIs.

  6. Don't hold in urine: When you need to go, go. Holding in urine for too long can cause bacteria to multiply in the urinary tract.

  7. Consider taking Cranberry supplement: Cranberry supplements have been shown to be helpful in reducing UTI.

  8. Talk to your doctor: If you are prone to UTIs, talk to your doctor about taking a low-dose antibiotic or other preventive measures.

How do I know when I'm suffering from a UTI?

There are several signs and symptoms associated with UTI, some of which include:

  • Increased urination frequecy/urge to urinate

  • Pain/burning sensation when urinating

  • Itching sensation when urinating

  • Pelvic/abdominal pain

  • Cloudy urine

  • Urine with foul odor

If you experience the aforementioned symptoms, there is a high likelihood that you are suffering from a UTI and prompt consultation with your medical provider would ensure timely treatment and subsequent relief of symptoms.

By following these recommendations, you can reduce your risk of developing a UTI. Remember to always see a doctor if you suspect you have a UTI, as untreated infections can lead to more serious complications.
